Alaska Building

Date: 2025

Status: Ongoing
A reconfiguration of a one bedroom flat in the historic Art Deco Alaska Building.

Originally designed  by Wallis, Gilbert and Partners, the commercial building - once at the heart of the UK’s leather trade - was converted to flats in the 1980s.

The project removes all contemporary addition from the two-bay volume of the apartment, and reorganises functions to offer living spaces the full vantage of the building’s large factory windows, arranged as a gallery along the facade. Kitchen, bathroom and utility programme are reconfigured along the rear wall, together with an entrance hall, study and bedroom - raised on a half-level with storage beneath.

The scheme seeks to maximise light and visual connection to the gardens, as well as clarify the rhythm and volume of the building’s robust structure and fenestration.
