Tucked within six acres of towering redwoods and shaped by the dramatic landform of a 100-foot waterfall, this project reimagines a modest timber cabin as the heart of a deeply restorative wellness retreat. Our work centers on enhancing comfort while preserving the sensitive ecology and natural beauty of this rare landscape.

The design expands the cabin’s offerings with carefully-sited wellness facilities—soaking pools, sauna, and quiet rooms gently threaded through the woodland—allowing guests to immerse themselves in the experience of living in the forest. Renewable energy systems, including discreet solar arrays and micro-hydro potential, support a self-sustaining environment that remains harmoniously integrated with the surrounding landscape.

Every intervention is guided by lightness of touch: lifted pathways to protect roots, materials selected to echo the existing cabin’s timber character, and forms that defer to the vertical presence of the giant trees. The result is a retreat that invites restoration while honoring the forest’s rhythms, offering visitors a way to feel held by the land rather than imposed upon it.

The clients’ hope is to make the forest a little more comfortable, while ensuring its beauty and ecological integrity endure.
